A colleague pointed out that the per capita rate of murders using guns has had more complex dynamics through time, hitting a peak in the mid-1970s, a trough in the mid 80s, a peak in the early 90s, a trough from the last 90s the early Teens, and a new peak now. Today's peak is comparable to the 1970s and 1980s peaks. The data I had showed only showed the most recent trough and peak.
